The Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust is pleased to announce the 2025 Annual Lecture, presented by Professor Dorothy Price, and taking place at The British Academy, London.
A Sense of Place: Lubaina Himid and the Sea
Professor Lubaina Himid CBE RA is an artist for whom the sea is especially significant in, across and through her oeuvre. In 1999 Himid held a residency at Porthmeor Studios, St Ives, where Barns-Graham also had a studio between 1940 and 1963. During her residency in Porthmeor, Himid produced a series of paintings and studies known as
Plan B.
In this lecture, Price will explore the sense of place formally inscribed in Himid's
Plan B
series as well as considering the role of the sea in subsequent painting series by Himid, such as
Zanzibar
(1999) and
Le Rodeur
(2016).
Professor Dorothy Price
is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art and Critical Race Art History at The Courtauld Institute of Art and a Fellow of The British Academy. She has published on the work of artists Frank Bowling, Lubaina Himid, Veronica Ryan, Chantal Joffe, Claudette Johnson, Chila Burman, Matthew Krishanu, Permindar Kaur amongst many others, as well as two monographs on modern art in Germany,
Representing Berlin

After Dada
in 2014. Most recently Price has curated a series of groundbreaking exhibitions
Making Modernism
(at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2023);

Entangled Pasts. Art, colonialism and change
(a main galleries show for the Royal Academy of Arts, 2024). She currently serves on the Advisory Board of Tate Britain and the Exhibitions Committee of the Royal Academy of Arts.

An evening of music and craft: womanhood | The Bridge
May 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
倫敦
This is the final session, and we’ll be working with clay! The goal is to create an object that represents womanhood.
We are asking everyone to share a song with us which reminds you of the most important women in your life. We will add these songs to a collective playlist and we'll listen to this as we craft.
Women only
How to Contribute
At The Bridge, we’re all about working together and building meaningful partnerships with the women in our community. We believe that everyone has something valuable to offer, and that means everyone has a role in shaping our work—because The Bridge belongs to all of us. We celebrate each person’s unique strengths and contributions, creating opportunities for everyone to get involved in a way that feels right for them.
Whether you give your time, skills, or financial support, every contribution means we’re working together to make The Bridge the space we want it to be.
One way to support our work is through our pay-what-you-can model, which ensures that our activities and events are accessible to all while allowing space for contributions to go towards helping us sustain what we do. Whatever you choose to give, it all makes a difference.
Want to get involved and contribute in other ways? We’d love to hear from you!

Семен Слепаков | 20.05 | London | The Clapham Grand
May 20, 2025 (UTC+0)
EN: A long-awaited return after two years! Semyon Slepakov grew up in a family where humour was an integral part of life: sharp jokes, anecdotes, and funny stories were a constant presence. His father was from Rostov, his mother from Pyatigorsk, just like Semyon himself. However, his family roots extend further—to Ukraine: Odesa, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Chernobyl. Both of his grandfathers were economists and envisioned an academic career for their grandson. However, during his school years, the future artist was far from the image of a diligent intellectual heir: he could break a desk or throw something at passers-by from a window. Following family traditions, Slepakov wrote a PhD dissertation analysing the economic efficiency of the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts compared to their French counterparts. However, academia did not bring him creative fulfilment. The desire to make people laugh took over. His first attempts at humour were far from successful. As he recalled: “My father advised me not to laugh until I had told the punchline. And not to laugh alone—wait for others to laugh first.” This lesson stayed with Semyon for life. True success came in the field of comedy: witty song lyrics, popular TV projects, millions of online views, scripts, and the production of iconic comedy series—Slepakov became one of the best in Russia. But everything changed with the outbreak of war. Slepakov took a firm anti-war stance, which led to a ban on his work in Russia. Interestingly, in an old interview, he once joked about such a scenario: “Will they ban me? Cut off my hand? Which songs will they ban—only the funny ones or all of them? Will they forbid me to sing altogether? Well, then I’ll write books, poems, do stand-up. The main thing is to express myself and maintain a connection with people. The method of communication does not matter.” That is exactly what happened. His concerts continue to sell out worldwide. For two years, Slepakov lived in Israel, but he has only now decided to return to the stage—and on a grand scale. Five concerts in five cities, almost completely sold out with minimal advertising—a clear sign that the audience remembers, loves, and awaits him. His new programme will include everything: dialogue with the audience, jokes, songs, reflections on life, and stories of what has happened over the past two years. On stage stands a man labelled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities, an Israeli citizen by passport and at heart, who continues to write, sing, film, and move forward. These will be special evenings—filled with humour, warm interactions, and the important realisation that life goes on. For Semyon Slepakov and for his fans. Iron Lung: Kirstine Reffstrup & Hunter Simpson with Aidan Cottrell-Boyce | Pages of Hackney
May 22, 2025 (UTC+1)
倫敦
A girl is struck down by polio during the terrifying epidemic of the early 1950s. Paralysed and unable to breathe on her own, she is committed to hospital in Copenhagen and placed in an iron lung. Forty years earlier, near Budapest, a child grows up in an orphanage for boys. The child goes by the name of ‘Boy’ but is not like the others, as their body seems to transcend the categories of boy or girl. Between these two young people, there is a powerful, enigmatic bond that stretches across time and space. Kirstine Reffstrup was born in Denmark and lives in Norway. Her first novel, I, Unica, was published to great acclaim in 2016 and was nominated for literary prizes in both Norway and Denmark. Her second novel, IRON LUNG was first published in 2023 and was nominated for the prestigious Politiken Literature Prize. The same year she was awarded the Stig Sæterbakken Memorial Prize. Hunter Simpson was born in North Carolina, USA, and lives in Copenhagen. He won the 2022 Leif and Inger Sjöberg Prize for his translation of Stine Pilgaard’s The Land of Short Sentences. He also translated Pilgaard’s first novel, My Mother Says. Aidan Cottrell-Boyce was born in Liverpool and lives in London. He completed his PhD at the Divinity Faculty of the University of Cambridge in 2018. During his doctoral studies he ran as a Parliamentary candidate for the Green Party. His first novel, The End of Nightwork, was published by Granta in January 2023 and he was chosen as one of the Observer's best debut novelists of 2023.

May 22, 2025 (UTC+1)

Autograph's new exhibition
Dianne Minnicucci: Belonging and Beyond
explores how vulnerability and discomfort in front of the camera can become acts of self-discovery and collaboration.
What does it mean to be unguarded? What do we reveal of ourselves to each other?
Minnicucci embraces the unease of being photographed – where to look, how to position the body – allowing these moments of uncertainty to shape this new series of portraits of herself and her young son.
The artist will be in conversation with Gem Flectcher at this event where they discuss the the art of vulnerability in photography.
The ticket price for this event is £5. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If this ticket price is unaffordable for you, please get in touch with Harriet at
