Oct 10, 2024 (UTC+0)結束
倫敦
Join us for an enchanting evening that delves into the world of gothic fiction and historical intrigue with acclaimed authors Kate Griffin, shortlisted for Crime Writers Association Endeavour Historical Dagger and Polly Crosby, author of Vita and the Birds. Perfect for fans of dark, atmospheric stories, this event offers a rare chance to hear directly from the minds behind the gripping new novels Fyneshade and The House of Fever. Kate Griffin’s Fyneshade, named a Sunday Times Historical Fiction Book of 2023, offers a dark gothic tale set in a decaying mansion. The story follows Marta, a governess with a sinister past, as she navigates a world filled with silent servants and forbidden secrets. This twisted narrative is perfect for fans of gothic fiction. Polly Crosby’s The House of Fever takes readers to 1935 and Hedone House, a luxurious sanatorium where high society meets the creative elite. Agnes Templeton, the doctor’s new wife, finds herself drawn into the house’s mysteries, caught between a past she wants to escape and a future full of regret. Crosby’s novel is a haunting exploration of desire and deception. This panel will explore the authors’ writing processes, the gothic and historical elements in their work, and their unique approaches to storytelling. Don’t miss this opportunity to uncover the secrets behind Fyneshade and The House of Fever.

Experience a magical evening with German Romanticism. We start with Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture, a 1821 masterpiece that ushers in German Romantic opera with its dark, mystical atmosphere and folklore-inspired drama. Next, enjoy Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, performed by the exceptional Lucilla Mariotti. This 1866 concerto, famed for its lyrical beauty and technical demands, will captivate with its emotive depth. The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, composed in 1883. This deeply personal symphony blends grandeur with introspection, embodying Brahms’ motto frei aber froh ( free but happy ). Join us for an evening of evocative music and outstanding performances that celebrate the heart of Romanticism.

Poetry Launch - Amortisation by Deborah Finding | Soho Poly
Oct 24, 2024 (UTC+0)結束
倫敦
Doors from 6.30pm. Event starts 7.00pm. Deborah Findingis a queer feminist writer with a background in academia and activism. Her debut poetry pamphlet, ‘Vigils for Dead and Dying Girls’ was published with Nine Pens in 2023. Her second, 'Amortisation', just released, won the Live Canon 2023/2024 pamphlet prize. Other poetry publications include fourteen poems, Propel, berlin lit, Anthropocene, Poetry Wales’ ‘How I Write a Poem’ series, The Alchemy Spoon, iamb and The Friday Poem. She has also been widely anthologised, and has written features and interviews for The Guardian, the Huffington Post and DIVA magazine. Deborah won the Write By The Sea poetry prize and the Indigo Dreams Spring Poetry Prize, and has been placed, shortlisted or commended for the Troubadour, Live Canon, Hexham, Hammond House, Goldsmith, Oxford Poetry Library, Renard Press, and Ver Poets prizes. Her debut poetry collection, 'My Marxist Valentine', is forthcoming with Write Bloody in 2026. Originally from the North East of England, Deborah now lives and works in London, where she is also the inaugural poet in residence at the Soho Poly. Amortisation charts a queer love in all its messy glory, from first flush to heartbreak. In it, Deborah Finding writes poems that are often funny, sometimes sad, but always moving; poems that, despite their personal nature, we can all somehow recognise ourselves in. While it may chart a slowly depreciating relationship, Amortisation never gives up on the power and hope of connection. The poems sing with bright, fresh images that celebrate love, even when it hurts. - Ben Townley-Canning The first delight of Amortisation is the wide ambit from which it draws its sentimental vocabularies: cartography, technology, accounting, commerce, formal logic and therapeutic practice are all raided for their metaphorical possibilities, and this makes for poems filled with canny, funny and self-deprecating flourishes. Its quieter enjoyments lie in its ambivalent relationship to risk and sensuality: these are poems that know about wood and kindling and firelighters and whisky, and about the pleasures and dangers involved in serious, sensuous play. - Abigail Parry The voices of Deborah Finding’s work are so blazingly here and now: vivid, restless, they cry out over haunting soundtracks and fleeting urban glimpses. It’s a poetry bristling with hope and sex and scorn, but joy is never far away in all its forms and colours. Amortisation is to be deeply relished. - Glyn Maxwell Evidence that dating a poet is an extreme sport. - Caroline Bird Photo credit: Tessa Foley

“Akhmatova's Orphans. Disassembly” (2024) is a documentary that follows four Leningrad poets — Joseph Brodsky, Evgenii Rein, Anatoly Naiman, and Dmitrii Bobyshev — whom Anna Akhmatova called her “magic choir.” After her death, they became known as the “Akhmatova orphans.” In this film directed by Yuri Leving, the poets reflect on the origins of the “orphans” myth, their literary careers, and the fractures in their friendships. It is a story of memory, poetry, and the passage of time.

Bending Light: The Moods of Color showcases photographer Eric Meola's use of light and color throughout his career of editorial, advertising, and personal work. In one hundred iconic photographs, including recent experiments with color abstracts, and in dozens of stories and anecdotes, he examines his five-decade journey using color in photography, its symbolism, and how it affects our moods. Meola's work is informed by writers, painters, musicians, and the desire to create visual metaphors with his imagery -- whether intimate portraits, unique landscapes, or color-saturated abstracts, his use of geometry within the frame of the photograph creates a tension that is instantly recognizable. In awarding him its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023, the Professional Photographers of America noted that Eric Meola champions photography as a visual language capable of great emotion. He's a photographer with a love affair for color, light, and artistic freedom. As Meola says, Light and color are my subject as much as the subject itself. It's the confluence of color with light -- the movement within the color -- that's important to me. Although the end image is a still photograph, the story of its creation, the how and why it came to be, is part of every photographer's psyche. Telling the stories behind the photographs is my way to revisit the creative process, both as a means of introspection as well as expression. Photography has always been a way for me to create what I feel, and feel as I create. Bending Light: The Moods of Color takes us on a visual journey around the world as Meola tells the story behind the creation of each image, giving insight into the thought process behind creating photographs. A photographer from Rangefinder magazine referred to him as one of a handful of color photographers who are true innovators.
