This is an amazing place. For day trippers, the Buddhist temple and the precinct around it are well worth a visit. For people suffering from illness, it is a remarkable place and visitors come from across China to stay there for up to two weeks. Before the pandemic, you could stay in the dormitories inside the temple walls; now I think you can only stay in the hotels outside the temple grounds. Either way, it is inexpensive - the temple dorms are free (though a donation is appreciated) while the hotels are pegged at much reduced prices. Vegetarian food is served for breakfast, lunch and dinner while snacks can be purchased from the shops nearby.I have had sleep problems for thirty years and on my first night at the temple, I fell asleep at 10pm and woke up at 6am the next day feeling completely refreshed... I have the sense that the temple may be built on lay lines or some other geological feature which gives it a unique energy. I have visited 4 times so far.Temple attendees can participate in the chanting activities in the main hall or simply stay in their dorms and read or walk around the temple grounds. Chanting begins at around 6am and continues in several sessions through the day until approximately 8pm. It is led by the monks and nuns who live full time at the temple and there are volunteers who assist the visitors. 99.9% of people are Chinese though they are happy to see foreign visitors. All the information however is in Chinese so bring a translator or brush up on your Mandarin skills. In the evening, you can watch the monks performing in the drum tower and then the bell tower.Since the pandemic started, I am told that the temple has closed periodically and that foreigners (and sometimes Chinese people) are not allowed to stay in the dorms. I have never been able to find a website for the place so if you want to visit, make your way to Huazhou city and then ask a taxi driver to take you to the temple - it's very close.I really recommend it.
